The Old Brooder is great for a civilised hen gathering, seeking somewhere rural, quirky and stylish - all on a modest budget and easily accessible from London by train (and 10 minute taxi ride). The bunkhouse is situated down a long drive on our wildlife-friendly working farm with ancient wild flower meadows, ponds, newts, dragonflies ... and hedged farmland views, two friendly pigs and lambs in the spring.
Hens have four brightly furnished bedrooms - one sunny upstairs bedroom sleeping 8 on comfortable beds, and, at ground level, one bedroom sleeping 8 in generous joiner-made bunk beds and thick, comfy mattresses and, lastly, for those who want to escape the party for a bit more sleep or want more privacy, two bunk bedrooms sleeping two in each! There are four shower rooms (including a ground level wet room for the less mobile) and four loos. You can get together in the upstairs sitting room to have a drink, play a game or watch a film, and downstairs you can cook and feast together at rustic elm tables in the well-equipped kitchen (or get a chef in who cooks with or for you!), enjoy a barbecue in the garden - or in summer find a spot to picnic on our castle earthworks or by our millennium lake.
In the summer sporty hens can do yoga in the garden, play croquet, badminton and table tennis or the very energetic can play rounders or have a sports day on our meadows or orienteer around our farm tracks. Beyond, discover the very beautiful and historic Lavenham and other medieval local villages and nature reserves via circular footpath routes and a pub lunch - and maybe a pamper at the Lavenham spa. You can borrow our 20 road bikes and enjoy our circular planned cycle routes or Wool Town bike trail quiz on quiet country lanes. Or hire kayaks and canoes locally and row down the River Stour for a pub lunch. Further afield Go Ape on hire wires in Thetford Forest, have an evening at Newmarket Races, or book a coastal cruise and meal aboard a little boat. We’ve got masses of ideas of you can come and enjoy rural Suffolk!
