Monkhouse Hill offers a fabulous Lake District venue for your hen weekend or birthday celebration. There is a total of 9 cottages, imaginatively created from a converted 17th century hill farm with panoramic views across the Eden Valley. Featured here are our three largest 5 Star Gold Award cottages – Great Calva (sleeps 12- 14), Laing Barn (sleeps 10) and Brae Fell (sleeps 8) – however other smaller cottages can be booked alongside these depending on the size of your group.
All the cottages have outdoor hot tubs, and garden furniture. What’s more, you have full complimentary membership during your stay of the North Lakes Spa, where facilities include a flat-deck swimming pool with saunas and steam room and a state of the art gym. The Spa also has a beauty treatment area, which is particularly popular with hen groups staying in the cottages.
Monkhouse Hill is set in 5 acres of landscaped grounds with a small lake, a stream and woodland areas. So there’s plenty of space for any outdoor games you want to include during your stay, or maybe use one of the waterside picnic tables to enjoy an evening drink.
A little further afield there is some easy (and some more difficult…) walking in the Northern Fells, the chance for a memorable trip on Ullswater Steamers, or to try some ‘gentle outdoor adventure’ at venues such as Rookin House Farm. Details of these and many other options are on our own website.
We provide links to a range of external caterers who have worked at Monkhouse Hill should you want to celebrate in style, as well as details of a range of local pubs and restaurants that welcome larger groups. And don’t forget to visit the nearby Old Crown in Hesket Newmarket – Britain’s first cooperative pub.
Our largest cottage Great Calva sleeps up to 14 people in three double bedrooms, three twin bedrooms, and a second sitting room with sofa beds. There’s an outside hot tub, and one of the three bathrooms is also a sauna suite. The main dining table seats 14, but additional tables can be added for up to further 8 people if required. Upstairs is a large vaulted sitting room with tremendous views stretching 30 miles.
The Laing Barn comprises Raven Howe and Round Knott cottages. Entrances to the two cottages are adjacent, onto the shared patio in the courtyard. There are no internal joining doors, however access between is also possible via the shared first floor balcony on which you will find two hot tubs with superb views. Laing Barn sleeps up to 10 people, with a double, a twin and an adult bunk room in Raven Howe and a double and two singles in Round Knott. All ten can dine together in Round Knott’s large living area.
Brae Fell Cottage is a clever conversion of an ancient barn which simply oozes character. Sleeping 8 people in two family ‘bedroom suites’ (each with a twin, a double and a bathroom), Brae Fell has a downstairs kitchen and dining area (up to 12 can dine together with extra tables) and an atmospheric upstairs sitting area with many original beams. The upstairs bathroom has a spa bath. Outside is a new garden area with large hot tub and furniture.
